LAX Cutting Free EV Parking in March

Home / Auto News / News article: LAX Cutting Free EV Parking in March

Los Angeles EV owners should take note: the free parking policy at LAX on March 1.

The announcement has some EV owners up in arms, but it’s a good sign depending on which angle the issue is examined from. It means EV owners will have to pay the $ 30-per-day parking fee, but it also means that there are so many people parking electric cars at the Los Angeles airport that it’s becoming a financial burden. Given that, isn’t it slightly hypocritical for EV evangelists to complain?

“No one understands why we’re doing this—especially in today’s economy,” said Nancy Castles, an LAX spokeswoman, to the Wall Street Journal.

Airport authorities say that if the two free terminal lots were full of EVs every day for a year, it would cost the airport $ 44 million. By that math, the LAX forfeits more than $ 15,000 of revenue in a single day if only one of its lots is 25 percent filled with EVs.

The move isn’t very different from the California government’s decision to stop granting HOV passes to Toyota Prius owners. Special incentives disappear as more people adopt the technology.
